Digital Vs. Analouge

Below is a brief summery of the differences between Digital and Analouge CCTV systems as well as the advantages of investing in a Digital CCTV system.

Digital
Analogue

Systems can record for days, weeks or even months depending on the size of the storage drive and the number of cameras/resolution settings.

Tapes should be changed each day to avoid the risk of recording over footage. Each tape can record a maximum of 24 hours in time-lapse mode.

Image quality is the same no matter how many times you record to the hard disc, the picture quality does not degrade following multiple recording or playback.

Tapes must be changed on a regular basis due to wear and tear as the picture quality degardes after long term use.

Picture quality on digital recordings is of a higher quality due to the available banwidth of the format compared to analogue.

Copying the original video casette tape for distributing the footage to others further reduces the quality.

Systems are capable of recording up to 400 images per second and record simultaneously from all connected cameras (depending on model).

VCR's switch from camera to camera in sequence rather than recording from all cameras at once.

Incidents can be found very quickly, by simply inputing the date and time it took place, rather than looking through hours worth of footage.

You have to watch through, or fast forward through the footage to find the incident you are looking for.

GPRS, Wireless LAN and other forms of connectivity mean that you can communicate with the recorder to access and review files, as well as being able to upgrade/check the system.

Taking still pictures from the video cassette or sending copies of the video footage is not easy and requires addtional equipment.

Files can be stored on the hard drive of an office computer, network server, CD or other form of media at low cost.

Storing video casettes for future review requires a large number of tapes and office space!

Video files and still images can be transferred to CD and sent at low cost to other parties for review.
