Footage from millions of CCTV cameras across Britain could be useless as evidence in court because most operators are failing to abide by the law, a new watchdog has warned. Defence lawyers could exploit technicalities to "drive a coach and horses" through prosecution cases, allowing criminals to escape justice simply because camera tapes are not stored securely or monitoring screens are visible to the public.

Sagem, a French telecoms company, has collaborated in the development of a surveillance system that is making advances in tracking. The new system would enable an operator to choose a suspect and follow him through dense crowds, despite any subsequent changes in appearance.
A CCTV operation was set up by Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire following a complaint made by a member of the public.The object was to find out who, or what, was responsible for regularly leaving a mess by the side of the road at Cleckheaton, which was thought to be fouling by a dog.

James Clark School of Engineering, is developing a real-time computer monitoring system to monitor surveillance images and detect suspicious movements or individuals. The system alerts human security personnel if it detects any suspicious activity.
Fast food restaurants such as Subway and McDonald’s in the US are increasingly benefiting from the use of survillience systems - a trend that other food service companies are expected to follow. Surveillance experts believe that the food industry will be the next big industry to take-up the use of closed circuit systems in order to combat increasing levels of theft.
